While this is not a verbal question I often get, it is an unspoken one.
If I don’t know the client well, and if we are not addressing a specific problem that requires conversation during the massage session, it is not uncommom for a client to hesitantly start a little conversation early in the massage – like a test to see if I, as the massage therapist, will engage.
In case you’re wondering, it’s okay to chat. Generally, your massage therapist will go with the flow. If you want to chat, they will respond. Rarely will they or should they initiate a conversation.
I like the analogy that describes it this way: During a massage, you’re having a professional body treatment, you’re not at a cocktail party. You do not need to talk with the massage therapist, but there are some times to speak up – and you absolutely should in these situations.
Remember, this is your massage, and you are probably paying dearly with your time and money for it. Get what you came for – a good massage the way you like it!
